The popularity of college grants for women has been on the upswing during the past years, because more and more females are striving to receive higher education. There are many different types of women educational grants. They serve various purposes but all promote and support the advancement of women. They are particularly important when it comes to encouraging women to enter fields that are not traditionally regarded as “female.” College grants are popular because they are gifts. They do not need to be paid back. This is very appealing for most people. While other forms of student financial aid, like loans, are also helpful, they do not offer free monetary gifts. Therefore, most students prefer to receive educational grants that save them from making loan repayments that may last decades. Because of this generosity, getting grants is difficult. The selection process is competitive. Another form of financial aid, scholarships, also offer free financial assistance, but they are very hard to get and require strict criteria. There are college grants that promote women who study science, as there are those that help minority females, as well as older women who want to go back to school. Look for these and other programs at colleges, women’s groups, and nonprofit organizations.

Current programs & official sources

The text above is preserved from the original grantsandwomen.com article. The information below is added to bring it up to date with current, official sources.

Today, the largest need-based federal education grant is the Federal Pell Grant (apply via the free FAFSA), and women-focused awards include the AAUW Fellowships & Grants, P.E.O. programs, and Soroptimist's Live Your Dream awards. Legitimate programs never charge an application fee.

Avoid grant scams

Legitimate grants are free to apply for. Walk away from anyone who:

  • guarantees you a grant, or says you were 'selected' for money you never applied for;
  • charges an upfront 'processing', 'application', or 'grant kit' fee;
  • asks for your bank-account or card number to 'deposit' a grant;
  • pressures you to act immediately.

Verify any program directly at its official .gov site, and report fraud at reportfraud.ftc.gov. More on our grant-scam awareness page.
